  1. How do I request a Big Brother or Big Sister for my child?
When both an adult family member/guardian and child agree that the child would benefit from having a mentor, the adult is encouraged to contact BBBSD to request a Big Brother or Big Sister.
  2. What is the process of obtaining a Big Brother or Sister for my child?
All a parent or guardian has to do is call our office to begin the process. An Enrollment Specialist will set up an appointment with you and your child. Then, as volunteers complete the application/training process, the specialist reviews the profiles of available children and matches "Bigs" with "Littles." Matches are made based on many factors, including similar interests, hobbies and geographic proximity.
  3. What are the requirements for my child to be eligible for BBBSD?
Children must be between the ages of 6 and 14 upon enrollment and reside in the Coachella Valley. They can remain in the program until they are 18.
  4. Are the volunteers trained? What safety processes are in place for the kids?
Each volunteer is interviewed by a professional Enrollment Specialist, has a full national background search conducted, fingerprints taken and DMV records obtained. In addition each volunteer is put through training. Our Match Support Specialist communicates regularly with the volunteer, child and parent to ensure the safety of all.
  5. Do I have to be a single parent in order for my child to be eligible?
No. We believe that every child can benefit from having a friend and mentor in his/her life.
  6. How often does the Big Brother/Big Sister visit my child? What do they do?
We ask our volunteers for a one-year commitment of a few hours spent with a child two or three times each month. Activities include going to a park, museum, or movie. We offer site-based programs in Coachella, Cathedral City, Indio, La Quinta, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs, in which mentors visit their Littles about an hour per week at the assigned facility.
  7. How do I know if this is the right program for my child?
BBBSD is committed to transforming lives through rewarding and enriching relationships between trained mentors and kids of all backgrounds. This means that our program is for every child that wants a positive role model and friend in their lives.
  8. I'm interested, but can I get more information before making a decision?
Call (760) 568-3977 and talk to an Enrollment Specialist, or email us anytime. We will be happy to provide all the information you need to make a decision.
