bigs and littles
the making of a match
A lot of things have to happen before Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert makes a match. After they express an interest in our volunteer opportunities, all our Bigs (ages 18-plus) go through a thorough background check and careful interview process. Then we match Bigs and Littles based on location, personalities and preferences. And we provide full support for our volunteer programs along the way - so that matches can grow into lasting friendships.
what bigs and littles do
What matters the most to the children is not the activities, but the fact that they have a caring adult in their lives. And because they have someone to confide in and look up to, they tend to do better in school and at home.
Getting together is a great time for both Bigs and Littles. It doesn't require a special occasion or expensive activities; just a few hours every month sharing simple things you already enjoy with a young person.
Our community-based matches tell us they enjoy doing activities such as:
- Shooting hoops
- Playing a board game
- Sharing a pizza
- Taking a walk in the park
- Or just hanging out and talking
In our site-based mentoring programs, Bigs and Littles meet for one-to-one mentoring at the Boys & Girls Clubs in Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, Indio and La Quinta. Bigs and Littles typically meet once a week to read together, play sports or computer games, or simply talk about life and personal issues - just as friends do.
